The IEEE 1584 family has a third document. IEEE 1584.2-2025 covers data collection for arc flash hazard calculation studies on three-phase 50/60 Hz systems at 1000 V and below. It was published September 19, 2025 and ANSI approved February 11, 2026.
The family now splits three ways
- IEEE 1584-2018 — the calculation models. Incident energy and arc flash boundary, 208 V to 15 kV.
- IEEE 1584.1-2022 — scope and deliverables. What an owner should be asking for in a study.
- IEEE 1584.2-2025 — data collection. Checklists for the field information the calculation needs.
What this changes for owners
Most disputes about a study's validity come down to the field data. Missing conductor lengths, unrecorded breaker trip settings, guessed utility fault current, no serial numbers on the protective devices. 1584.2 gives a checklist to hold a study against. If a study's data collection can't be reconstructed from its documentation, the incident energy numbers on the labels can't be defended either.
What's still moving
The calculation guide is also being revised. IEEE has an active project, P1584, to supersede 1584-2018. Scope stays 208 V to 15 kV three-phase AC. No draft or ballot date is published yet. Facilities with studies built on 1584-2018 have time. A revision to the incident energy models is now on the schedule.
